Workshop: Fundamentals of Deep Learning: NVIDIA Certification Workshop-Part 2
Wednesday June 4, 2025 8:30am - 12:30pm CDT
This two-part workshop will introduce deep learning techniques and applications.

Deep learning is a powerful AI approach that uses multi-layered artificial neural networks to deliver state-of-the-art accuracy in tasks such as object detection, speech recognition, and language translation. Using deep learning, computers can learn and recognize patterns from data that are considered too complex or subtle for expert-written software. Each session is roughly divided into 3 hours of interactive teaching and 1 hour of extra Q&A.

Three components below will spread over the two sessions:
- The mechanics of deep learning with a focus on computer vision.
- Use pre-trained models and deep learning models to solve problems.
- Object classification and research applications.

Upon successful completion of the assessment, you’ll receive an NVIDIA certificate.

Important
A laptop is required to participate. ISU students can borrow a laptop through the library’s Tech Lending program.

Prerequisites:
An understanding of fundamental programming concepts in Python 3, such as functions, loops, dictionaries, and arrays; familiarity with Pandas data structures; and an understanding of how to compute a regression line.

NOTE: you will need to register separately for this workshop officially at Eventbrite at this link: https://GPN2025AM.eventbrite.com Just add them to your cart (if you are already registered for the meeting), they are free to you), and check out.

Breakout 5: GlobalNOC AlertMon Agent SDK
Wednesday June 4, 2025 9:15am - 10:00am CDT
In 2023, the GlobalNOC at Indiana University became the Virtual Network Operations Center ( VNOC ) for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory project. Part of the GlobalNOC's role in the project was to provide a mechanism allowing for the submission and aggregation of alerts from the network providers involved in the project. To meet this end, an SDK was created allowing the network providers to easily develop agent software capable of submitting alerts on their respective networks to the GlobalNOC's alert aggregation software, AlertMon. This talk will touch on the Vera C. Rubin Observatory project, the GlobalNOC's role in the project as the VNOC, the components of the AlertMon Agent SDK, and how GlobalNOC partners can leverage this SDK for their own use cases.

Breakout 6: A Carpentries Collaboration: Teaching Foundational Coding and Data Science Skills to Researchers
Wednesday June 4, 2025 10:00am - 10:45am CDT
Many researchers, particularly graduate students, lack the skills needed to do computational, data-intensive research. These skills are often not included as a part of basic research training in many disciplines. Carpentries workshops can help fill this need by teaching foundational coding and data science skills to researchers, employing openly available lessons and ‘code with me’ pedagogy. This session will present a case study in how, with the support of the Great Plains Network’s Carpentries Instructors Mentoring, Kansas State University has established a cross-disciplinary community of interest to offer Carpentries Workshops to researchers on campus and with USDA partners.
