Workshop: An Introduction to Nextflow for Building Bioinformatics Workflows
Monday June 2, 2025 1:00pm - 5:00pm CDT
This carpentry style hands-on workshop introduces participants to Nextflow, a powerful workflow management system for building reproducible bioinformatics pipelines. The workshop will also be useful for researchers creating workflows in other domains. Participants will learn core Nextflow concepts—such as processes, channels, and operators—through a hands-on example that uses Illumina short-read data from Arabidopsis thaliana chromosome 2.The workshop will guide attendees through creating a complete genomic data processing pipeline that performs quality control with FastQC, read preprocessing with BBDuk, and genome size estimation using GenomeScope. By the end of this four-hour session, participants will understand how to structure bioinformatics workflows in Nextflow, manage inputs and outputs between analytical steps, and implement best practices for pipeline organization. No prior experience with workflow managers is required, however, basic command-line skills are necessary. This workshop emphasizes practical skills that participants can immediately apply to their own research projects.

Prerequisites: Basic familiarity with the command line (bash) is recommended.

Important A laptop is required to participate. ISU students can borrow a laptop through the library’s Tech Lending program.

Max Participants: Around 25–30 would be ideal to ensure a hands-on, interactive experience.

NOTE: you will need to register separately for this workshop officially at Eventbrite at this link: https://GPN2025AM.eventbrite.com Just add them to your cart (if you are already registered for the meeting), they are free to you), and check out.
